What is a CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture is a relationship that brings farmers and consumers together. By joining a CSA, people have the opportunity to enjoy seasonal eating and a close connection to their food source, while helping local sustainable agriculture flourish. Consumers who are members of West Haven Farm CSA pay for a portion of the farm's expenses and receive a share of the harvest in return.
Your Share of the Harvest
We take great pride in offering the freshest, highest quality, well-washed produce available anywhere. We provide only those crops which are in season or store well. We plan very carefully to have a steady supply of staple vegetables as well as a variety of more unusual items, and always strive to grow the most flavorful varieties of vegetables available.
Each week's share includes a full selection of freshly picked farm-grown organic produce. Shareholders bag their own weekly portions from a farm-market-type display with lots of choices at either West Haven Farm or a location in Fall Creek.
What size share should I get?
Full Shares Full shares are the standard share size. A full share provides a good amount of produce each week for a typical household with two adults. The cost for a Full Share in the CSA is $600 (sliding scale $504 to $696). New for 2016 If you split your share with another family in the past, please choose a small share this year. Are hope is that this will reduce complexity for the farmers and CSA members.
Small Shares. The small share is roughly half the size of the full share and is suitable for a smaller household with a single adult. Small shares are available for $348 (sliding scale $300 to $396).
Larger families, big vegetable fans and institutions can buy 2 or more full shares at the bottom of the sliding scale ($504 each).
CSA Policies and FAQ’s
Signing Up Our CSA signup process uses Farmigo, an online CSA management software. When you sign up, you will create a secure online account. You can login to view and edit your account, change your pick-up location, make payments, place a vacation hold and more. If you are having any technical problems, there is a Help link under the Welcome menu in the upper right corner. Or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Payments Electronic checks have fewer associated fees for us, so that is our preferred payment method. However, you have the option to pay via credit card if that is more convenient for you. You can choose to pay all at once (Thank you!) or be billed in monthly installments. Billing is automatic and you will get a statement by email. We do not store any of your personal or financial information on our website. Our order site is run by Farmigo and your information is stored securely by Authorize.net. You may also send us a personal check, hand us cash, or pay with food stamps through Greenstar.
What’s The Sliding Scale? We have always valued making good, healthy, organic food available and affordable to as many as possible in our community. Letting members pay what they can (within a reasonable range) for the same share is one way we do that. We trust you, the member, to self-select what you can pay for the CSA share. The Average Price is the minimum amount we need to run the farm, pay the farmers a modest income, and to continue offering the sliding scale. Most people pay the average amount, but many pay more or less, and since 1994 it has pretty much always worked out! This year, because of the limitations of our new signup software, the sliding scale is more of a “staircase” with 5 specific price levels.
Pick-Up Locations There are two pick-up sites - at the farm and downtown in the Fall Creek neighborhood. Choose a pick-up site when you sign up for the CSA.
The farm is located at EcoVillage Ithaca, approximately 2 miles from Downtown Ithaca. To get to the farm, take Route 79 west out of Ithaca. About 2 miles past GreenStar, turn left on Rachel Carson Way (this is a big gravel road and the entrance to EcoVillage). Go about 500 feet, then turn left onto the farm’s small dirt road.
The downtown pick-up site is located behind Northstar House restaurant and the old Fall Creek Pictures at the corner of Tioga and Falls St.
Pick-Up Times Farm: Tuesdays from 3:30 till 9PM. Downtown: Wednesdays from 3:30 till 6:30PM. The season for the CSA runs from late May through early November, about 24 weeks.
Changing Your Pick Up Location If you want to change your pick up location, please log into your account and change it two days before your pick up day. If you let us know in advance we can occasionally arrange for you to pick up at our farmers’ market stall the Saturday before or after.
Missing a Pick-Up If you know you'll be gone on your pick-up day, you can arrange for a friend or neighbor to get your share. If you end up missing the Tuesday farm pick-up, you can still log into your account up until 8AM Wednesday and change your location to Wednesday at the downtown pick-up (from 3:30 - 6:30). For the Wednesday Fall Creek pickup, there is no makeup time. If you do end up missing your share, at least you'll know you've made a good contribution to our local food pantries—that's where all the leftover produce goes.
Add-Ons At the pick-up sites we offer optional “add-on” products for sale to supplement the veggies and strawberries in your share. We’ll be offering West Haven’s own certified organic tree fruit (peaches, plums, apple) as well as staples (bread, meat, eggs, etc.) from local folks who do a great job at what they do.
Optional Shares New for 2016 Wide-Awake bread, West Haven fruit, and Autumn’s Harvest eggs are now available as additional CSA shares. Add these CSA shares when you sign up for your veggie share, or any time after that. By purchasing the share ahead of time, you’ll be guaranteed your peaches or bread won’t already be sold out when you come, plus you’ll get them at a discount.
You-Pick There's a lot of stuff at the farm for shareholders to pick: flowers, herbs, and more of things like peas, beans, cherry tomatoes, paste tomatoes, and berries which are too labor intensive for us to harvest a huge amount of for everyone. You’re welcome at the farm any time - after all, you're the shareholders!
Newsletters We try to keep in touch with you with weekly newsletters that let you know what's going on at the farm, and offer tips about what to do with the goodies in your share that week. If you have recipes you'd like to share with others, we'd love to pass them along in the newsletter.
Work Day We request that all shareholders try to come work on the farm for at least one three-hour work shift each season. Many people satisfy this by coming to our annual Weed ‘n’ Feed on Labor Day weekend. It’s always a fun time to meet at the farm, do some work, and share a big meal together afterwards. We welcome shareholders to work with us in the garden anytime or to just bring a picnic - play in the sandbox and enjoy the view! If you know you will probably not be working, there is a $25 Opt-out option when you sign up
Working Shares We offer a limited number of discounted shares each season to reliable, hardworking shareholders in exchange for substantial help with the harvest. If you are a returning working share, please contact us before signing up - we will give you instructions for how to sign up online. For first-time working shares, you may only work towards a small portion of the cost of your share. Contact us prior to signing up.
Scholarships We also sponsor a few members every year through a small scholarship fund, composed of donations from other members. You can donate money when you signup - thank you for helping us help others. Please let us know if you or someone you know could use some support.
Cancellations You may cancel your CSA membership at any time, giving us two-days’ notice before your pick-up day by emailing us at email@example.com. We will give you a pro rated refund for the remainder of the season.
Our Guarantee We guarantee our produce for quality and freshness, and pride ourselves in providing excellent customer service. If for any reason you are not happy, please let us know - we want to make it right. We will be happy to replace or refund any produce that does not meet your standards.
